The grass spider is a type of spider that, as their name suggests, lives within the grass of your homes front and back lawns. Males are smaller than the females at about 5 mm in length. The Grass spider is a sit-and-wait type predator. If you compare abdomens (and I realize, for some folks, that’s a really big IF), you’ll notice that grass spiders have two projections at the rear. The dense webs form a sheet that narrows to a tube or funnel where the spider hides awaiting prey on its web. Grass spiders are web-based critters while wolf spiders are ambush predators that eschew webs in favor of pouncing on prey. This species varies in colour with some displaying more yellow, while others are more silvery. Grass spider webs are ubiquitous on evergreen shrubs and tall grass. This long abdomen varies in length and extends beyond the spinnerets. Typically a sheet spans the exterior of the funnel, which is used to entangle prey, and the spider waits in its funnel retreat for the springy web to vibrate.
